UEFA announced that the change made by the International Football Association Board (IFAB) regarding the accidental handball rule will be implemented in the 2021 European Championship (EURO 2020).
In the statement UEFA made on its website, they indicated, the changes that normally will come into force on July 1 will first commence in EURO 2020, which will start on June 11.
IFAB changed the handball rule already in March. However until the new term, competitions were allowed to implement the new rules at their own discretion. Looks like UEFA will be one of them.
With the amendments to Article 12 of the Football Laws of the Game regarding fouls and abuses, not every touch of the player’s hand/arm to the ball will be a violation.
If an accidental handball happens in the build-up to a goal, it will no longer count as a violation of the rule.
According to the amendment, the cases where the playing with hands is a violation are as follows:
“If a player deliberately touches the ball with their hand/arm by moving their hand/arm towards the ball. Touches the ball with their hand/arm when it has made their body unnaturally bigger. Scores in the opponents’ goal either directly from their hand/arm, even if accidental, including by the goalkeeper; or immediately after the ball has touched their hand/arm, even if accidental.”
